High Dune has a summit higher than any other sand dune in North America, at an elevation of 8,691 feet above sea level. The hike to High Dune takes roughly two hours and awards anyone who summits the massive sand beast with great views of the entire dune complex that is Great Sand Dunes National Park. Still, this isn’t the tallest sand dune in North America. That title goes to Star Dune, a short distance away. Because the valley floor slopes downward to the west, Star Dune’s summit is at a lower elevation although it is technically a larger dune.
